Career and Educational Planning

Career and/or educational planning are vital to reaching your goals. Without a realistic plan to follow, people are less likely to reach their goals. By taking into account your interests, personality, values, lifestyle, and skills, a career counselor can assist you in developing a plan that you are very comfortable with and excited about working towards.

Resume and Cover Letter Enhancement

Your resume and cover letter are very important documents. A resume is a summary of your work experience, accomplishments, and personal characteristics. A cover letter is a professional letter submitted to employers that accompanies your resume. It introduces your resume to the employer. The goal of the resume and cover letter is to encourage the employer to contact you for an interview. Often it is difficult to write such documents about yourself. By working with a career counselor, you are often able to enhance the content, wording, and overall style, usually leading to an increase in the number of job interviews obtained.

Confidence Building

A loss of confidence can often occur when, for example, you are unemployed, unsure of your career interests, and/or unable to meet your employer’s expectations. It is important to address this early with a career counselor in order to allow you to move forward and continue on a path that allows you to shine.

Job Search Strategies

When searching for a job, sometimes it is difficult to locate positions that meet your interests and qualifications. There are multiple locations where job ads are posted (online job search sites, newspapers, listservs, employer websites, etc.). By working with a career counselor, together you can find ads that meet your needs, often increasing the number of ads found in a shorter period of time.

Networking Development

Networking is a very important skill to have that involves building professional relationships. It is a process of developing contacts and creating ways to acquire information. Since more than 80% of all jobs are secured through networking, by learning to network effectively, you increase your opportunities for employment. Career counselors work with clients to establish new contacts, maintain current contacts and re-establish former contacts. Many people do not feel comfortable networking. Career counselors assist clients in overcoming this discomfort, thereby allowing you to be in a position that may increase your chances of gaining satisfying employment.

Interview Skill Building

Without strong interviewing skills, sometimes job seekers are unable to secure satisfying employment. In order to make sure you are offered positions that meet your expectations, improving your interviewing skills is vital. An increase in confidence often occurs and your overall presentation usually leads to more job opportunities.
